Struck off for refusing to bind a child's hands in iron, tutor Tamsin Venn takes the only post left: teaching Duke Ronan Vale's eight-year-old daughter, Liora, whose magic lifts things she cannot put down. In the first lesson Liora corrects a history book about Queen Hesper, the tyrant her father defeated at the Weir Gate: "That is not where they buried my crown." Now an inspector from the capital is coming to watch a lesson, and the children the inspectors take do not come back.
